Bob Crawford's father, Captain Melton W. Crawford flew 78 combat missions as a bombardier in the 408th Bomb Sqd., 22nd BG., initially in B-25s and then in B-24's, His seperation papers credit him with participation in battles and campaigns in: New Guinea, Bismarch Archipelago, Northern Solomons, Western Pacific, Southern Philippines, and Luzon. His final assignment was as group bombardier.
The Red Raider shield featuring a viking warrior was adopted after the 22nd Bomb Group received its B-24 Liberators and Colonel Richard W. Robinson assumed command of the Group.
