DUCEMUS - We Lead!

Lt. William J. Reinka's jungle mansion in February 1945 at Samar, Philippine Islands had all the comforts of home. Well, almost all. Most of the materials to furnishing it were acquired through first bartering cigarettes for "lots of liquor." Bill said, "We traded some of our liquor fresh from the Sydney R&R for the necessities to make life easier. We caught the rainwater in the eave trough system to store in the drum with a spigot so we had ready water for our shaving and washing needs. We built this tent with a plywood floor and vented the top. Inside we had a discarded parachute for insulation and to brighten up the interior. We brought back from Sydney some folding chairs and constructed a plywood table. The cloth around the tent had a middle section of screening material o let the breezes flow through." Sharing the tent were pilots Capt. James Rock, Lt. Lt. Bill Reinka, Lt. Jim Conley and bombardier Lt. Max Stevens.
