On 24 March 1945 Lt. Zola Cohen lifted 2nd Bomb Squadron's B-24L #44-49698 off the runway at Clark Field, Luzon at 0835. Plane and crew were never heard from or seen again. Somewhere along the route to the target the plane disappeared.
The mission was a strike on Takao, a coastal shipping and railroad center in southwestern Formosa. The target for the squadron's six Liberators was a warehouse and docking area at the port. Weather was clear as the aircraft flew up Lingayen Valley and then followed the west coast north to the assembly point over Calayan Island. Only five planes reached it. Speculation was that they had flown into the side of a mountain on Luzon but post war search was unsuccessful.
